Rae’s Recs, June 16

Welcome all, to this week’s Rae’s Recs! This small, weekly comic recommendation posts every Thursday and I’ll be doing my best to bring you some cool titles you may not have noticed on your first go-round on New Comic Book Day! I recommend two of my favorite single issues for the week, one or two graphic novels or trade comics from the past few weeks, and then two all-ages comics. These have no time frame, but are just some really great titles to share with a kiddo, or even an adult, in your life. One ongoing, one completed.

All Ages and LGBT+

Often, I see people say that kids don’t understand a lot of things. They don’t understand sexuality yet, they don’t understand gender, they don’t understand the difference between those things, they don’t understand consent, they just don’t understand. In reality, however, kids very much do understand these things. In some ways, they understand them so much better than adults to, because they’re still forming their own opinions.

Wonder Woman

With DC movies as of late, it’s always better to hope for the best, but remember to keep your expectations low. That said, I walked into Wonder Woman with just that and came out kind of blown away. Was the movie perfect? No. Would I pay to see it again? Definitely. It was not only a fun movie, but the best DC film that’s come out in years. (At least, not including the animated films. But we won’t get into how rad DCAU is just right now.)

Spoilers here! Watch your eyes!

These Are Their Stories

Naturally, I spent a recent sick day on the couch watching a Law & Order marathon on cable. I mean, it’s what you do, right? Amongst the many spin-offs, there are a seemingly infinite number of episodes, all structured in a rigid and predictable way that has heavily influenced your standard-issue criminal procedural drama. Thanks to that huge backlog of episodes and syndicated re-runs, you can find an episode of at least one of the series on television at virtually all hours.
